In Psalms 121:1, the psalmist asks a question, “I look to the mountains; where will my help
come from?” (GNB). While the question is evidently rhetorical/poetic, many
today really have a problem answering that question.
Now, if we’re to be real with ourselves, we all
need help; especially in these dire times that we live in. The cost of living
skyrockets every day, the inflation rate’s rising alarmingly (along with the
attendant “shrinkflation”). And the wealthgap between the haves and the
have-nots keeps increasing that the “Occupy Movement” may soon need to rephrase
their war slogan.
Added to these is the constant threat to life
and property and the general uncertainty bedevilling every sector of the
economy.
It’s no wonder our prayer points have gradually
changed over the years. It’s no wonder ministry emphasis have transformed with
time to cater for more “financial miracles” that were unheard of in the times
of our Lord or the Apostles. It’s no wonder that self-help seminars are now a
staple in our church calendars. It’s no wonder books about getting help are
bestsellers, or that the prayer points concerning “destiny-helpers” gets prayed
the loudest …
It’s no wonder; even God should know that we
need all the help we can.
Nevertheless, in all our searching for help, we
may need to remind ourselves that God is the only help we need. The dynamics and structure of the economy may
have changed over time, the art of ministry may have taken new dynamics,
parenting and discipline may not be as straightforward as in yesteryears, etc.
But God hasn’t changed. He’s still as powerful today as He was yesterday. Solving
problems hasn’t become harder for Him, and the servers in heaven aren’t being overwhelmed
with our modern troubles.
God’s still ever willing and ever able to help us
if we reach out to Him today.
As the MSG translation puts it, why should I
look up to the mountains, “does my
strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from GOD, who made heaven,
and earth, and mountains. – Ps
121:1-2 (MSG).
AMEN.
More Blessings await
you today; you’ll not miss them in Jesus’ Name.
