Mary’s Miracle

There was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there. – Jn 2:1

Of all the innumerable miracles performed by our Lord while He was on Earth, His turning of water into wine is quite fascinating. It’s not your typical miracle or “sign”; in fact, given the way it transpired, it almost did not happen. The miracle was not on Jesus’ to-do list that morning;

Jesus wasn’t even a ‘miracle worker’ yet, and even if He were, it’d be difficult to pass off one’s poor wedding planning as a legitimate need requiring God’s intervention.

But fortunately for the couple, they had invited just the right person to their wedding – Mary.  This is why I call the miracle, “Mary’s Miracle” because if she had not been there, it wouldn’t have happened. Not because Jesus was callous or insensitive but because she was the only one present that knew what Jesus could do.

Evidently, the couple were relatives or at least family friends of Jesus seeing that they invited both Him and Mary to the party and also considering Mary’s involving of herself in their predicament. Some commentators contend that Mary was only reporting the issue to Jesus. Others say she was asking Him to give some godly exhortations to the guests to save the bridegroom from embarrassment – and possible legal action (the Jews take their wedding ceremonies pretty seriously). Nevertheless, considering Jesus’s response, it’s pretty clear He understood what she was asking.

Are you in a similarly tight spot today? It’d be nice to have Jesus as your relative, wouldn’t it? Better still, it’d be nice to have Jesus as a relative and a ‘Mary’ who’s familiar enough to know what He could possibly do and also ask Him to do it on our behalf.

Thankfully, that’s exactly the way things are right now! Because of our adoption into God’s family at salvation, Jesus is now our Elder Brother,  literally! And not only do we have the benefit of historical/biblical hindsight to know the miraculous powers that He possesses and is able to exhibit, we also have the Holy Spirit, resident inside us, making us “ know the things that are freely given to us of God.” (Jn 1:12; 1J 3:1; 1Co 2:12) Glory!

Beloved, you have an omnipotent, all-loving elder Brother. Don’t suffer in silence, take your problems to Him today; like 1Pe 5:7 says, “Casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you.”
