‘ARRIVAL’ MENTALITY

The Philistine army had a hero named Goliath who was from the town of Gath and was over nine feet tall. He wore a bronze helmet and had bronze armour to protect his chest and legs. The chest armour alone weighed about one hundred twenty-five pounds. He carried a bronze sword strapped on his back... Many years ago, I saw the theatrical poster of the 1998 movie, GODZILLA; the fascinating tagline of the movie was “Size DOES Matter”. I couldn’t agree more. Especially with respect to the philistine champion Goliath.

Towering at over 9 feet, he is easily the largest man known to history. Everything about him was mega: from his helmet to his shin guards. His body armour alone weighed more than a normal man, but would have felt like a broomstick to his large body.

Not only that, he had earned his reputation through years of experience in warfare since his youth. He was in one word: The Champ.

And moving up from being a warrior to a champ, comes with its benefits, like having someone to carry your shield for you while you strut around. But what Goliath forgot was that it was the shield that kept him alive to be a champ in the first place; now that he has ‘ARRIVED’, he now needed someone else to carry it for him.

Isn’t it interesting that when Goliath was killed, it was from a stone to his head? How could a stone hit your head Goliath? With just one movement of your hand, any projectile would have bounced easily off your shield.  But wait! You were not with your shield, it was still with your sidekick when the stone came. Alas!

Beloved, whatever grace took us to the top, is the same that will keep us there. An “I have arrived” mentality is a quick way to fall back down. That was the error of “the rich fool” in our Lord’s parable (Lk 12:16-21); and that’s an error we must all avoid.

Let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. – 1Co 10:12.

For I say to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God has dealt to every man the measure of faith. – Rom 12:3.
