“Gray’s Anatomy” is a widely regarded and extremely
influential textbook of the human anatomy written 160 years ago (1858) by a
young medical lecturer called Henry Gray. The book was so popular with medical
students and doctors that long after Dr Gray’s death, many editions were being
published. There’re over 70 editions (American and British) of Gray’s Anatomy today
with the latest published just three years ago.
Gray’s Anatomy, of course must not be confused
with “Grey’s Anatomy” – the critically
acclaimed and hugely popular American medical drama TV series that premiered March,
2005, and which entered its fifteenth
season last week. The series (deliberately titled as such as a wordplay on the aforementioned
medical textbook) focuses on the lives of “Dr Meredith Grey” and her fellow
surgical interns, along with residents, and attending physicians, as they
develop into seasoned doctors while trying to maintain personal lives and
relationships.
Our series this week, however, is neither about
the human body nor about American entertainment, but about a theme that has
been at the fore of Christian discussions lately and which seems to not go away:
GRACE.
With much talk going on the internet about the “Grace”
Movement; and pastors – and churches – somewhat now being split on two sides of
the issue, it’s important that we revisit this fundamental doctrine of
Christianity.
Admittedly, many of us had taken the doctrine
of Grace for granted and have been rather blindsided by the sudden grace-mania
that has taken over the church today. This, I believe, is responsible for the
kneejerk reaction many have anytime the word “grace” is mentioned anywhere.
It behoves us therefore, to take the time to examine,
scrutinise, analyse in detail and, yes, anatomize
this thing called Grace. So that we may, firstly, show ourselves approved unto
God, and secondly be workmen that need not to be ashamed – ready always to give
an answer to everyone that asks us a reason of the hope that is in us with
meekness and fear: (2Ti 2:15; 1Pe 3:15).
AMEN.
More Blessings await
you today; you’ll not miss them in Jesus’ Name.
